Study Abroad Information
The Judy Genshaft Honors College is committed to making study abroad accessible for as many students as possible. Honors study abroad programs offer funding opportunities, flexible time commitments and course options, immersive experiential ÐßÐßÊÓƵing, and the support of the Honors community abroad. With thoughtful planning alongside their advisor, students can seamlessly integrate study abroad into their academic journey.

Why Study Abroad
Global citizenship is a cornerstone of experiential ÐßÐßÊÓƵing at the Judy Genshaft Honors College. Studying abroad allows students to broaden their worldview, reflect on their own identities and values, and gain a deeper understanding of how cultures interact. Honors study abroad programs provide not only the chance to observe other cultures, but to engage with them meaningfully through academic and service-based experiences.
When to Study Abroad
Every student’s academic path is unique. While many students study abroad during their sophomore or junior year, the ideal timing depends on individual goals and degree progress. ÐßÐßÊÓƵ should work closely with their advisor to determine what’s best for them.
When to Start Planning
For spring and summer Honors programs, applications are typically due the fall semester before travel. ÐßÐßÊÓƵ who start planning early with an Honors advisor – preferably in freshman year – will find it easier to fit their study abroad experience into their degree program.
Studying Abroad Fulfills an Honors Requirement
Studying abroad counts as a Global Experience to satisfy one Honors Experiential Learning Requirement. Browse other global experiences or ways to satisfy Honors Experiential Learning Requirements on the Experiential Learning Requirements page.
How Many Programs to Apply For
Some Honors programs are more competitive than others. To maximize your chances of acceptance, we recommend applying to more than one program when possible.

Fall Honors Study Abroad Programs
While most Honors programs take place in the spring or summer, the Dominican Republic Beyond the Classroom program is a fall course with travel occurring in early to mid-December.
Non-Honors Study Abroad Opportunities
Honors students are welcome to study abroad through both the Judy Genshaft Honors College and ±«³§¹ó’s Education Abroad Office. However, Honors international programs are strongly recommended, as they emphasize interdisciplinary ÐßÐßÊÓƵing, offer dedicated staff support, and provide additional funding opportunities.
Honors Study Abroad Scholarships
Honors students in good Honors academic standing who have not previously studied abroad may be eligible for a travel scholarship from the Judy Genshaft Honors College. Awards are given once a student commits to participating in an Honors-sponsored study abroad program. Scholarships are disbursed during the term the program takes place and may cover up to half the program cost, based on financial need.
ÐßÐßÊÓƵ eligible for a Pell Grant are also encouraged to apply for the Gilman Scholarship, which can award up to $5,000 in funding towards a credit-bearing study abroad program.
Qualified incoming students will also be able to apply for the prestigious Genspiration Global Explorers Scholarship, a merit-based $10,000 award. This invitation-only scholarship is awarded to qualified First-Time-In-College (FTIC) students from all three USF campuses. Recipients of this scholarship are not eligible for additional Honors travel scholarships.
ÐßÐßÊÓƵ using their study abroad experience to fulfill an Honors co-curricular requirement will receive an Honors scholarship after completing the program and submitting the Honors Experiential Learning Requirement form via the .
